Believers of Cthulhu is a sport title that oozes ethereal intrigue, but you might be surprised to learn that it’s not a black RPG or a frightening story-arc if this is your initial encounter. In truth, it’s a town architect and arrangement director. That places the genre in a brand-new and exciting context as well as introducing some mechanics that I did n’t anticipate seeing playing in an Anno or City Skylines rival.
You play the ruler of a cult in Worshippers of Cthulhu as the one who rescues Cthulhu from a stupor. You need to purchase materials to build buildings and develop your arrangement, residents can be given jobs and trades, and you’ll have to maintain a close eye on your resources. All of the common elements of town building games are here. Of course, anything is dripping in ethereal sauce.
But, layered on top of all this are some really interesting details. You will encounter some non-believers in the course of the game, and you will have to make a decision about what to do with them. Either you spend some time, money, and perhaps some disturbing power, or you will accept them as a sacrifice. You also have your own intricate concepts and scenes, which add an amazing amount of detail to the sacrifices and rituals you carry out.
For instance, you can recertify an inhabitant’s abilities and career by inserting a royal dagger into their back. Yes, actually. Little occurrences like this give you a welcome break from the demanding jobs, selections, and tracking of your properties and citizens.
Rituals also offer the ability to calm massive Lovecraftian villains to battle alongside you.
This seems like one of the most innovative and original-looking city contractors I’ve seen in a while, so I’m glad it’s then made the big move into first entry.
